Australia’s First Affordable Adventure Motorcycle Rally, For Beginners and Amateur Riders.

OpenRoads Rally is a three-day adventure motorcycle event to be held from 18 to 20 October 2019 in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Up to 350 participants will try their skills on three tracks ranging from beginners’ to intermediate level. Riders navigate via a digital road book to find checkpoints. Other activities include an enduro course, barrel racing, presentations and live music.
The event was founded by female rider, Jessica Zahra (@joinbikergirl). Jessica started the event because she found there were no affordable, convenient events for intermediate riders to try in Australia.
‘I’ve been riding for five years now – in some hairy places around the world! – and I wanted to test my skills before committing to expensive, inter-state and overseas competitions. But all of the rallies I could find were too serious, far away or expensive. I felt like I might not be good enough to participate in these events, or that being female, I might not belong. So, I decided to make my own rally. A beginner-friendly rally. To some extent, an incubator, for riders who want to participate in cross-country rally competitions.’
Jessica first posted her idea to the Australian Adventure Motorcycle Riders’ Group on Facebook and received an overwhelming response of support and excitement.
‘I never imagined I would actually create this event, it was just an idea. But that idea became a reality when over 300 people registered their interest from the Facebook post.’
‘A lot of people said it couldn’t be done. “A cheap rally? For beginners? If it were possible, it would have been done!” But this is what adventure riding teaches: anything is possible with determination … and cable ties and tape.’
The goal of the rally is to bring people of all experience levels together to challenge themselves and have fun. Jessica hopes the event will create a safe space for female riders to join. And that it will strengthen the community of adventure rally riders in Australia.
